Homeless Hostels Support Workers, Concierges and Security

Night Concierges

When a hostel or supported accommodation scheme needs someone at the door overnight, HHS Group’s Night Concierges provide building presence, access control and a calm, visible point of contact from evening handover through to morning. They are the first line of site security and reception — checking who comes and goes, holding keys, monitoring entry points and escalating anything that needs a rapid response. This is distinct from our Night Support Workers, who focus on resident welfare and casework rather than access control.

When hostels use Night Concierge cover

Night Concierge staff suit services that need a consistent overnight presence at reception: controlling who enters the building, managing key holding and sign-in/sign-out procedures, monitoring CCTV and alarm systems, and being the calm first point of contact if something happens after hours. We supply concierges as part of a fully outsourced Contract Cover arrangement, or reactively through Agency Cover when you need urgent waking night cover to fill a rota gap.

What our Night Concierges do

  • Control building access and manage arrivals, departures and visitor sign-in
  • Hold and log keys and fobs in line with your site procedures
  • Monitor CCTV, alarms and communal areas throughout the waking night shift
  • Complete handover notes and incident logs for the day team
  • Escalate safeguarding concerns, security incidents or emergencies to the right person, and liaise with our control room
  • Support a Psychologically Informed Environment (PIE) approach in every interaction with residents and visitors

Where a resident needs welfare checks, one-to-one support or casework during the night, that responsibility sits with a Night Support Worker rather than a concierge — we’re happy to advise which role, or combination of roles, fits your site.

Vetting, training and site-specific induction

Every Night Concierge is Enhanced DBS checked before deployment and completes a site-specific induction so they understand your building, your residents and your procedures before their first shift. Alongside our core training package, concierges complete courses covering:

HHS Group Night Concierge staff training session
  • Conflict management and lone working for Night Concierges
  • Safeguarding for night staff
  • Fire safety awareness and first aid for night staff
  • Mental health awareness and emotional intelligence
  • Data protection, GDPR and evidence-based documentation
  • Equality and diversity, and Prevent/radicalisation awareness
  • Hazard identification, risk control and sleep-deprivation awareness
  • Modern slavery, bribery act and working safely and securely

Frequently asked questions

How is a Night Concierge different from a Night Support Worker?
A concierge focuses on building access, key holding and site presence. A Night Support Worker focuses on resident welfare, safeguarding observation and casework. Many sites use both.

Can you cover an urgent rota gap overnight?
Yes — our Agency Cover service supplies vetted concierges reactively for sickness, leave or unexpected gaps, alongside our fully outsourced Contract Cover model for ongoing sites.

Are concierges checked and inducted before they start?
Every concierge is Enhanced DBS checked and receives a site-specific induction covering your building, your residents and your procedures before their first shift.
