Waking Night Support Workers for Hostels & Supported Housing

Home » Waking Night Support Workers for Hostels & Supported Housing

HHS Group is a UK staffing provider that supplies Child and Adult Enhanced DBS-checked Waking Night Support Workers to homeless hostels, supported housing and temporary accommodation across England, Scotland and Wales. HHS Group’s Night Support Workers provide waking night cover focused on resident welfare, safeguarding and one-to-one support — not building access, which is the role of our Night Concierges. If a resident needs someone to check in on them, de-escalate a difficult situation or respond to a crisis overnight, a Night Support Worker is the right role for your site.

When hostels use waking night support worker cover

Night Support Workers suit services where residents need welfare checks, emotional support or safeguarding observation through the night — not just someone at the door. We supply this as part of a fully outsourced Contract Cover arrangement for ongoing sites, or through Agency Cover when sickness, leave or an unfilled shift leaves you with a rota gap that needs urgent waking night cover, including surge cover for emergency winter night shelters and Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) activations.

What our Night Support Workers do

  • Carry out regular waking night welfare checks on residents throughout the night
  • Provide de-escalation and emotional support during a crisis or difficult moment
  • Observe and record safeguarding concerns, and escalate them through the correct channels
  • Write clear case notes and complete a full handover for the day team
  • Liaise with emergency services when needed, and with our control room for additional support
  • Work within a Psychologically Informed Environment (PIE) approach, understanding trauma and vulnerability

Where a site’s main need is access control, key holding and reception cover rather than welfare support, a Night Concierge is usually the better fit — many of our sites run both roles side by side. For support that travels between multiple sites during the day rather than one site overnight, see our Floating Support Workers.

Vetting, training and site-specific induction

Every Night Support Worker is Child and Adult Enhanced DBS checked and completes a site-specific induction before their first shift, so they understand your residents, your risk assessments and your escalation procedures from day one. Our specialist training covers health and safety, conflict resolution, safeguarding and working with vulnerable people, and we regularly update it to keep pace with the changing needs of the homelessness sector.

Frequently asked questions

How is a waking night support worker different from a Night Concierge?
A waking night support worker focuses on resident welfare, safeguarding and casework throughout the night. A Night Concierge focuses on building access and site presence. See our Night Concierge page for a fuller breakdown of the two roles. Many services use both roles together.

Can you cover a last-minute rota gap overnight?
Yes — our Agency Cover service supplies vetted, trained staff reactively for sickness, leave or unexpected gaps, alongside fully outsourced Contract Cover for ongoing sites.

What checks and induction happen before a worker starts?
Every worker is Child and Adult Enhanced DBS checked and receives a site-specific induction covering your building, your residents and your safeguarding procedures before their first shift.
